Portfolio Submission Week of May 26

Next week you need to submit your portfolio on Tuesday or Wednesday. Place it in the drop slot by my office. Please include all poems. Please revise all poems. Please place stars on your two favorites that weren't in the last portfolio. These will receive special attention.

Submit!

Final Submissions are due before the next class.

Here's what you need to do:

1. Find a magazine to submit your poem to--online or in print. use this site for find it: http://www.duotrope.com/. Follow the directions of the magazine you select for submission.

2. Submit your poem and CC me a copy of the submission

3. Print out the submission to bring to class.

4. Wait for acceptance or rejection.

This is the assignment that keeps giving. You will enjoy getting a response after the class if over. Have fun waiting!

TURNING OFF AUTO FORMATTING IN WORD

Hate those pesky capitalization edits that keep popping up uninvited in Word? Shut 'em off any time in four quick clicks:

1. Click the "Format" tab at the top of your Word document.

2. Choose "Auto Format" from the drop down menu.

3. A little box appears and offers to Auto Format (ruin) your poem a couple of different ways. Skip these and click the "options" button a little further down.

4. Now you're offered a four-tabbed box called "Auto Correct." Mine always opens on the fourth tab (Auto-Format) but that's the wrong one of course -- click on the first tab (Auto-Correct) instead. Congratulations! You are now the official commander of all your captal letters and can easily take control from here. Bye bye Cap'n?

My Evaluation of Class 2/25

I thought our class was a very lively and interesting experience that dug into some important poetry questions. What is poetic? What works? What are the possibilities? What works? These were the focus of last night's class. It is a great place to start. i look forward to reading your poems for this week. Remember to get into the words and provide plenty of criticism--both positive and negative for each poem.

Next week will be the first of many workshops. I can't wait.

Write a poem based on a Ch. 3 assignment.

Remember 4 sentences or less no matter the assignment.

Clarity on the Poetry Assignment

I want to make sure everyone is on the same page for the assignment. Write a single poem based on the exercises in Ch 2. One poem is fine. Make 24 copies of your poem. Bring it to class and place a copy of it with your name on it on the desk at the front of the room. I want your name on a copy for the weekly poetry grade. However, I will want to read a copy of your poem without a name. The syllabus says to give me two copies. That's what I mean.

Welcome

Ok, let me tell you a secret. You will fret about your poem and doubt yourself. Stop that now. Make sure you do the following and then relax and COME TO CLASS WITH YOUR POEM.


You have two weeks to write your poem. First read the chapters. Read about awful poems, and for goodness sake, avoid those things in your poem.

Now write your poem. You will worry about it. You will think it is not good enough. Stop that! Finish your poem and put it away. Make copies of it before class and put it away.

Do not doubt yourself. Wait. Leave it alone and wait.

Now COME TO CLASS WITH YOUR POEM AND COPIES. Once in class, you will find yourself at ease. life will be good and your poetic life will begin to blossom.
